THE    SCOOT



IN HIS "STEEL RAILS TO THE SUNRISE" RON ZIEL REFERRED TO THE "ELUSIVE SCOOT"
BECAUSE OF THE SPARSITY OF PHOTOGRAPHS.   THE SCOOT NORMALLY CONSISTED OF A
COMBINATION CAR AND A COACH AND AT FIRST MADE A DAILY ROUND TRIP BETWEEN
SAG HARBOR AND GREENPORT.   AFTER 1895 THE SOUTH FORK TERMINAL WAS AMAGANSETT.

THIS VIEW AT GREENPORT SHOWS THE SCOOT IN THE DISTANCE WITH TWO WOODEN CARS   BEHIND   A  D55 OR  D56 4-4-0.   AT THE LEFT ARE STEEL CARS,   THE NEAREST THE CAMERA   A 100 SERIES.



THE SCOOT DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE 1880 TIME TABLES.
IT DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE PUBLIC TIME TABLE OF JULY 28, 1881.

THIS NOVEMBER,   1883 PUBLIC TIME TABLE - A GIFT FROM BOB EMERY - SHOWS THE SCOOT LEAVING SAG HARBOR AT 10:00 A.M. AS NUMBER 572 AND CONNECTING AT MANOR WITH NUMBER 9,  THE EASTWARD GREENPORT TRAIN,  AT 11:55.   A CONNECTION AT THAT TIME MEANT THAT THE CARS FROM SAG HARBOR WERE ADDED TO THE GREENPORT TRAIN.





THIS JUNE 10, 1882 ARTICLE INFORMS US THAT THERE WAS A TURNTABLE AT MANOR.


THIS JUNE,   1885 EMPLOYE TIME TABLE - A GIFT FROM RON ZIEL - SHOWS THE SCOOT LEAVING SAG HARBOR AT 9:40 A.M. AS NUMBER 572 AND ARRIVING AT EASTPORT WHERE IT RECEIVED A CONNECTION FROM LONG ISLAND CITY TO SAG HARBOR TRAIN NUMBER 11.
THE SCOOT NOW PROVIDED NOT ONLY LOCAL ACCOMODATIONS
BUT ALSO SERVICE TO AND FROM POINTS WEST ON THE
MONTAUK DIVISION AND L.I.CITY AND BROOKLYN.

NUMBER 572 DEPARTED EASTPORT AT 11:21 AND ARRIVED AT MANOR AT 11:37, THEN DEPARTED MANOR AT 11:47 AS NUMBER 573, ARRIVING AT GREENPORT AT 12:51 P.M.   AS THERE WAS NOT YET A WYE AT MANOR THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO RUN AROUND THE TRAIN AND BE TURNED ON THE TURNTABLE, THUS THE TEN MINUTES PROVIDED IN THE SCHEDULE.

THE RETURN TRIP LEFT GREENPORT AT 1:25 AS NUMBER 574 AND ARRIVED AT MANOR AT 2:28, THE ENGINE RAN AROUND THE TRAIN AND WAS TURNED, DEPARTING EASTBOUND AS NUMBER 575 AT 2:43.   AT EASTPORT A CONNECTION WAS MADE WITH WESTBOUND SAG HAROR TRAIN NUMBER 36 FOR POINTS WEST ON THE MONTAUK DIVISION AND L. I. CITY AND BROOKLYN.   NUMBER 575 DEPARTED EASTPORT AT 2:58, ARRIVING AT SAG HARBOR AT 4:30 P.M.








THE WYE AT MANOR WAS CREATED IN 1887 WHEN PROPERTY WAS ACQUIRED
AND THE EAST LEG INSTALLED AS SHOWN ON THIS L.I.R.R. LAND PLAN.






THE SCOOT DID NOT ALWAYS HAVE ONLY TWO CARS.
EMPLOYE TIME TABLE NUMBER 27 FROM JUNE 1903 SHOWS THE WESTBOUND
SCOOT LEAVING GREENPORT AT 1:20 P.M. AS NUMBER 894 AND LEAVING MANOR
AT 2:37 AS NUMBER 895 ARRIVING AT EASTPORT AT 2:47.   A BAGGAGE CAR
WAS DROPPED FOR NUMBER 12 TO PICK UP AND BRING TO LONG ISLAND CITY.
