HEMPSTEAD   CROSSING

HEMPSTEAD CROSSING WAS CREATED IN 1873 WHEN A.T. STEWART'S CENTRAL RAIL ROAD OF
LONG ISLAND CROSSED THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD'S 1839 HEMPSTEAD BRANCH FROM MINEOLA.

THESE FOUR IMAGES ARE FROM TWO CIRCA 1930 AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS.

THE FIRST SHOWS STEWART AVENUE AT THE LEFT AND DOUBLEDAY - PAGE COMPANY AND THEIR SIDING AT THE RIGHT.


THE SECOND IS A CLOSE UP OF DOUBLEDAY - PAGE COMPANY AND THEIR SIDING.


THIRD SHOWS THE ELEVATED GATE TOWER IN THE MEDIAN OF STEWART AVENUE
AND HC TOWER, THE BRICK WATER TOWER AND PORTABLE SUB STATION BUILDING.


FOURTH IS A CLOSE UP OF HC TOWER, THE BRICK WATER TOWER AND PORTABLE SUB STATION BUILDING.

A BAGGAGE CAR ON DOUBLEDAY'S SIDING - THESE WERE REGULAR VISITORS


HEMPSTEAD     CROSSING     STATION

VINCENT SEYFRIED STATES THAT A STATION EXISTED THERE
FROM JANUARY UNTIL NOVEMBER 1875,   PROBABLY INSIDE THE WYE.

IN 1878 SOME HEMPSTEAD TRAINS OPERATED VIA THE STEWART LINE THROUGH CREEDMOOR AND SOME VIA MINEOLA.

THIS 1878 PUBLIC TIME TABLE SHOWED MOST STEWART LINE TRAINS STOPPING AT HEMPSTEAD CROSSING.


BETWEEN MINEOLA AND HEMPSTEAD SOME STOPPED AT GARDEN CITY,   MOST AT HEMPSTEAD CROSSING.


SEPTEMBER 22 1879 EMPLOYE TIME TABLE SHOWS NO STOPS AT HEMPSTEAD CROSSING.

JULY 4 1880 E.T.T. SHOWS TWO TRAINS STOPPING, PERHAPS ONLY TO DROP AND PICK UP CARS.

SUMMER 1885 E.T.T. SHOWS NO STOPS BUT SOME TRAINS BETWEEN HEMPSTEAD AND MINEOLA STOPPED AT GARDEN CITY.

ON SEPTEMBER 12 1893 THE NEW YORK BAY EXTENSION OPENED BETWEEN HEMPSTEAD CROSSING AND VALLEY STREAM.   THERE WERE NO INTERMEDIATE STATIONS.   SERVICE BEGAN BETWEEN MINEOLA AND VALLEY STREAM.
THERE WAS A GARDEN CITY STATION.   BASED UPON THE RUNNING TIME BETWEEN GARDEN CITY AND MINEOLA - FOUR, FIVE AND SIX MINUTES - THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE STEWART LINE STATION.   EVENTUALLY THE GARDEN CITY STATION WAS AT STEWART AVENUE.   BOB EMERY STATES THAT THE CHANGE WAS MADE IN 1894.   BILL SLADE SAYS 1896.
A 1973 LETTER FROM FELIX REIFSCHNEIDER STATES THAT HEMPSTEAD CROSSING -
STEWART AVENUE STATION OPENED 1N 1913 WHEN COUNTRY LIFE PRESS STATION OPENED.


THIS IS THE FIRST TIME TABLE, SEPTEMBER 12 1893.


THE N.Y.B.EXTENSION WAS REFERED TO AS "THE NEW LINE".


BY JUNE 28 1894 THERE WERE STOPS AT WEST HEMPSTEAD,   HEMPSTEAD GARDENS AND NORWOOD.
THE RUNNING TIME OF MOST TRAINS WAS THREE MINUTES BETWEEN GARDEN CITY (HEMPSTEAD CROSSING)
AND MINEOLA,   EVIDENCE THAT THE STATION WAS AT STEWART AVENUE.


JUNE 28 1894 PUBLIC TABLE SHOWS MINEOLA - HEMPSTEAD TRAINS STOPPING AT GARDEN CITY AND TAKING MORE
THAN THREE MINUTES.   EVIDENCE THAT THEY WERE USING GARDEN CITY STATION NOT HEMPSTEAD CROSSING.


THIS 1897 EMPLOYE TIME TABLE SHOWS TRAINS BETWEEN MINEOLA AND VALLEY STREAM
AND BETWEEN MINEOLA AND HEMPSTEAD STOPPING AT HEMPSTEAD CROSSING STATION
WITH THREE MINUTES RUNNING TIME BETWEEN HEMPSTEAD CROSSING AND MINEOLA .


1916 BLUEPRINT SHOWS STEWART AVENUE STATION NORTHWEST OF THE CROSSING.

BY 1923 STEWART AVENUE STATION ENDED UP IN THE MEDIAN OF STEWART AVENUE.
IN 1926 ELECTRIFICATION WAS COMPLETED BETWEEN VALLEY STREAM AND MINEOLA AND
STEWART AVENUE STATION WAS ABANDONED.   HENRY WILHELM SHOWED THE LOCATION IN 1923.
