IN 1957 THE LONG ISLAND LIGHTING COMPANY OPENED A NEW COAL BURNING POWER PLANT IN ISLAND PARK.
THE RAILROAD UNDERBID A BARGE OPERATOR AND WON THE CONTRACT TO DELIVER THEIR COAL. THE COAL TRAINS WERE KNOWN AS "SOUTH SIDE EXTRAS"
