SUNDAY JAMAICA TRAIN NUMBER 3706 LEFT PENN STATION AT 4:31 A.M. AND STOPPED AT WOODSIDE AT 4:40 A.M. OYSTER BAY TRAIN NUMBER 2504 LEFT LONG ISLAND CITY AT 4:32 AND ARRIVED AT "H" TOWER AT 4:38 WHERE IT SPENT FIFTEEN MINUTES, PERHAPS RECEIVING BAGGAGE CARS FROM PENN STATION AND/OR SUNNYSIDE YARD. 2504 PICKED UP NEW YORK PASSENGERS AT WOODSIDE, WAS ROUTED VIA THE GLENDALE CUT - OFF TO THE ROCKAWAY BEACH DIVISION, RECEIVED BROOKLYN PASSENGERS AT WOODHAVEN JUNCTION AND CONTINUED TO OYSTER BAY VIA VALLEY STREAM AND MINEOLA. AT VALLEY STREAM A REVERSE MOVE HAD BEEN NECESSARY SINCE 1910. |
UNTIL THE EARLY 1970'S TRAINS TO MONTAUK, GREENPORT AND PORT JEFFERSON CARRIED THE LONG ISLAND NEWSPAPER "NEWSDAY", PICKING THEM UP AT MINEOLA. THIS PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS MONTAUK TRAIN NUMBER SIX WITH THE NECESSARY BAGGAGE CAR CROSSING IRISH LANE IN EAST ISLIP IN 1972. THIS WAS THE LAST TRAIN TO CARRY PAPERS AND THE LAST REGULAR USE OF BAGGAGE CARS. BY 1974 THE SERVICE HAD ENDED.
