SAG   HARBOR   BRANCH   Part   ONE


THE SAG HARBOR BRANCH WAS BUILT IN 1870 AND RAN 35 1/4 MILES
FROM MANOR ON THE MAIN LINE TO SAG HARBOR.   AS SHOWN ON
THIS 1879 MAP THERE WAS NO RAILROAD LINE RUNNING EAST
OF PATCHOGUE.   BELLPORT WAS SERVED BY A MAIN LINE BELLPORT
STATION WHICH BECAME BARTLETT WHEN PATCHOGUE TO EASTPORT
JUNCTION WAS BUILT AND BELLPORT RECEIVED ITS OWN STATION.

MANOR   -   MANORVILLE



FROM JULY 1844 UNTIL 1875 MAIL WAS CARRIED BY TRAIN TO GREENPORT AND THEN BY BOAT TO SAG HARBOR.   FROM 1875 UNTIL MID 1881 MAIL WAS CARRIED ON SAG HARBOR TRAINS VIA MANORVILLE.   THEREAFTER THE SERVICE WAS VIA THE MONTAUK BRANCH, THE COMPLETION OF THE RAILROAD HAVING BEEN MADE BETWEEN PATCHOGUE AND EASTPORT.

AT THE SAME TIME THAT THE RAILROAD CALLED THE STATION
"MANOR"   THE POST OFFICE   REFERRED TO   "MANORVILLE".

MORICHES   -   EASTPORT

THE FIRST STATION EAST OF MANOR WAS MORICHES.

ON THIS L.I.R.R. LAND PLAN PARCEL N0. 11
IS THE LOCATION OF MORICHES STATION.



SEYFRIED'S VOLUME THREE LOCATES MORICHES STATION ON THE EAST SIDE OF SOUTH COUNTRY ROAD,   NORTH OF THE TRACK   -   WHERE THE NORTH   (RIGHT)   POLE  LINE  ENDS  JUST  BEYOND THE TRACK  SHANTY.

EASTPORT JUNCTION WAS CREATED IN 1881 WHEN THE BROOKLYN & MONTAUK RAILROAD COMPANY EXTENDED THE TRACK A DISTANCE OF 19.18 MILES FROM PATCHOGUE TO A CONNECTION WITH THE SAG HARBOR BRANCH AT EASTPORT.

RUNS STRAIGHT,   THE MONTAUK BRANCH CURVES AWAY TO THE LEFT.


IN 1962 THE RIGHT OF WAY WAS STILL CLEARLY VISIBLE.


IN 1916 A CABIN WAS INSTALLED TO HANDLE THE SWITCHES AND
SIGNALS AND TO REPLACE EASTPORT STATION AS A TRAIN ORDER OFFICE.
IN 1923 THIS FOUR LEVER DWARF INTERLOCKING MACHINE WAS INSTALLED.

EASTPORT   STATION

IN 1881 THE 1870 STATION BUILDING WAS MOVED EAST AND
RENAMED EASTPORT.     THIS EXCERPT FROM HIS FATHER'S
DIARY WAS  GIVEN BY  TOM BAYLES  TO  DAVE KELLER  AND
DESCRIBES  THE  BUILDING  OF   THE   NEW   PATCHOGUE   TO
EASTPORT JUNCTION LINE AND MOVING THE STATION BUILDING.




NOTICE MAJOR CHANGES TO THE BUILDING IN THE TWO LATER PHOTOGRAPHS.


BY 1918 THE OFFICE HAD BEEN EXPANDED TO THE SOUTH.


SUBSEQUENTLY MORE MAJOR CHANGES HAD BEEN MADE
AND THE DOORS AND WINDOWS DRASTICALLY ALTERED.
